The development of productive forces is characterised by an accelerated role played by new technologies, digitisation and the use of AI. This has, of course, major implications for the working conditions. The fear of replacement of jobs for humans is as justified as the recognition of new fields for employment, not least in the area of research and entertainment. Relevant is as well the development of cooperation (possibilities). Whereas the commonly presented picture of the global relationships is — for good reasons — marked bye confrontation, it is often forgotten that we find major cooperations on the enterprise level, not accepting the confrontation lines.

While cooperation is one important instrument of development, another important issue is that of new forms of work. An important role plays the so-called “gig-economy”. Early in October, the Chinese Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security issued a document, presenting measures to protect workers’ rights and interests. It is geared especially to address people whose work is organised in the framework of platforms, especially food delivery riders and ride-hailing drivers. The document is open for public debate. Questions are centrally concerned with the fact of a “trap of algorithms”.

Related questions had been also discussed recently, in the HRUG-TALK “TRANSFORMING LABOUR LAW IN GHANA: THE ROLE OF THE LABOUR LAW SOCIETY OF GHANA” (https://www.hrug.legal/?p=901)/ youtu.be/svmju8djNeA?si=z7nx8tM-CRPt6Irb Seeing it in a global perspective, the Chinese initiative is surely of central importance. At the same time and with it, it will be necessary to address three points that are linked:

Will be the development of the gig economy, reaching many more areas as those mentioned, a sufficient answer to the development of the productive forces? Will it be nessary to revisit the question of employment in more radical ways, linking it to the question of radical redistribution of time and thinking in terms of social and societally meaningful activities? — some of these questions had been looked at by Peter Herrmann (https://share.google/aimode/T5Bae0HBnvHRd8ZK4)

This is immediately linked to the question that especially young people have on the one hand many ambitions, want to be active and make use of their knowledge but feel often left out, not seeing secure perspectives for the realisations of their ambitions.

Not least we witness a change of life regimes and mode of living, i.e. the way people in their everyday life “cope” with the conditions of production and reproduction … — remember Frederic Engels stating that According to the materialistic conception, the determining factor in history is, in the last resort, the production and reproduction of immediate life. (Engels, Frederick, 1884: Origins of the Family, Private Property and the State, Marx Engels Collected Works, vol 26; Lawrence and Wishart electric books, 2010: 131) — “In the last instance” means that there are translation and transmission mechanisms needed; here we find general normative systems and attitudes as well as the concrete ways of accommodating oneself in and with the immediate network of “peers” (including family …). This is then also a matter of (human) rights, reflected upon in a medieval mnemonic verse: Littera gesta docent; quid credas, allegoria; moralis, quid agas; quo tendas, anagogia — The literal sense teaches what actually happened; the allegorical sense is to be believed; the moral sense instructs on how to act; the anagogical sense points toward the ultimate goal.

Major efforts must be made to address these issues, setting a legal framework that is reflecting the hermeneutic dimension and the complexity of given realities.

Changes and challenges today are varied and some are shared.
