ABSTRACT
Labour law and practice are undeniably at a cusp of structural and legal shifts in many jurisdictions, including Ghana. These changes are primarily influenced by modern technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), which continue to alter the nature of work, redefine employment relationships, and affect the fundamental rights and legal entitlements of both workers and employers. Recent advancements in labour law, at regional and international levels, significantly influence labour development in Ghana. This, in turn, affects how work is organised and transforms workplace dynamics in the Ghanaian labour market. The influence of technology on workers’ and employers’ rights, along with the evolving nature of work, requires labour institutions and social partners, especially those focused on labour justice and public interest, to adjust and adapt. This ensures they can continue to effectively defend and uphold the rights of Ghana’s most vulnerable workers. Essentially, as the transformation of work surpasses the capabilities of traditional institutions for developing and enforcing labour law, professional labour-law societies must go beyond standard networking and legal education. They should aim to become hubs for law reform, interdisciplinary research, policy initiatives, and regional cooperation. In this context, the Labour Law Society of Ghana was established.
Recognising the need to serve as an anchor for professional networking and a springboard to consolidate continued interest in labour law in Ghana, while simultaneously providing a platform that uniquely advances the tenets of strong legal and multidisciplinary scholarship in the Ghanaian labour market, the formation of the Society in Ghana is not only timely but also necessary. The purpose of the presentation is to highlight the strategic role of the Labour Law Society of Ghana, considering the following key roles in transforming labour law in the contemporary era. In addressing the aim of this presentation, due consideration shall be given to the following strategic roles of the Society, particularly to serving as a breadbasket for African labour law scholarship and research agenda, serving as a law reform actor by influencing legislation, regulations and policies, and developing the capacity of labour lawyers, judges and practitioners on emerging issues in labour law. Most importantly, through various activities, the Society intends to bridge the gap between academia, practice and policy, and connect Ghanaian labour law developments to broader African and international labour law debates.
